Thought Cloud - Elsa Support

Thought Cloud

This gentle reflective ‘Thought cloud’ activity is perfect for supporting emotional awareness in children. The sheet features a large central thought cloud surrounded by smaller prompt clouds to help children explore what’s been taking up space in their minds.

Children are invited to read or discuss each mini prompt such as “something I feel nervous about”, “a feeling I have noticed lately”, or “a question I keep thinking about” before decorating the big central cloud with whatever feels most important right now. They can draw, write, colour or doodle their response.

This is a calming, open-ended resource ideal for ELSA sessions, PSHE lessons, transition times, or quiet reflection. It helps children express themselves creatively without pressure, giving them a safe way to process their thoughts and feelings.

  • No right or wrong answers
  • Minimal writing required
  • Encourages self-awareness and emotional expression
  • Perfect for any age

Why it works:

Many children carry thoughts, worries, or questions they don’t yet have the words for. This resource gently brings those inner experiences to the surface, without expecting children to explain or fix anything.

It’s particularly helpful for:

  • Opening up conversations in a non-intrusive way
  • Helping children identify what’s taking up mental space
  • Supporting children who find it hard to talk directly about feelings
  • Promoting emotional vocabulary and self-reflection

The prompts around the edge are designed to spark curiosity and personal insight, some are light and playful, while others invite deeper thinking. What ends up in the central cloud might be something joyful, confusing, overwhelming, or calming. All responses are valid.

Ideas for use:

  • Use during one-to-one or group ELSA sessions
  • Add to an emotional check-in station or calm corner
  • Use at the start or end of term to support transitions
  • Pair with colouring materials for a mindful start to the day
  • Revisit over time to notice how a child’s focus or feelings change

We include instructions for use which is suitable for any adult in school to do or a parent.
