The Ripple Effect
The Ripple Effect worksheet is a gentle, flexible tool designed to help children understand how one action, word, or choice can have an impact beyond the moment. Using a simple ripple layout down the page, children are supported to reflect on what happened, how it made someone feel, what happened next, and who else may have been affected.
This activity encourages emotional literacy, empathy, and cause-and-effect thinking in a child-friendly way, without placing blame or judgement. It can be used to explore positive experiences, tricky moments, friendship difficulties, or acts of kindness, making it suitable for a wide range of situations.
Ideal for ELSA sessions, small group work, or one-to-one support, the worksheet offers plenty of flexibility. Children can draw, write a few words, use symbols or emojis, or talk through each ripple with a trusted adult. This makes it particularly helpful for children who find written reflection challenging or who benefit from visual structure.
How to use this worksheet
This worksheet can be used flexibly to suit the needs of the child or group. Begin by encouraging the child to start at the top ripple and work their way down the page, exploring each step in turn. There is no expectation to fill every ripple with writing, children may draw, use symbols or emojis, or talk through their ideas with an adult.
The activity can be used to reflect on a recent incident, a friendship situation, a classroom experience, or a positive moment. It works well as part of an ELSA session, in small groups, or during one-to-one emotional support. Take the process at the child’s pace, allowing time for discussion and reassurance where needed.
The focus is on understanding impact and building empathy, rather than blame. Children can revisit the worksheet more than once, using different situations each time.
