When Someone I Love Is Unwell – A Gentle Support Booklet for Children
When someone a child loves is seriously or chronically unwell, it can bring up a whole mix of emotions,  from sadness and worry to anger and confusion. This printable A4 booklet has been thoughtfully created to help children aged 5 to 11 explore those feelings safely, with kindness, and at their own pace. It includes a cover, 15 pages of activities, a note to the child and advice for an adult supporting the child.

Whether the person who is unwell is a parent, sibling, grandparent or carer, this resource supports emotional expression and connection through drawing, colouring, talking, and gentle reflection. It can be used in ELSA sessions, small groups, or at home with a trusted adult.

What’s Inside the ‘When Someone I Love is Unwell workbook?

  • A comforting introduction written just for the child
  • A note for the adult supporting the child
  • Pages to explore feelings, body signals, thoughts and worries
  • Gentle prompts to talk, draw or write about what’s happening
  • A rainbow check-in for brave and wobbly days
  • A worry jar, a comfort toolkit, and a circle of support
  • Activities to help children understand what they can and can’t control
  • A letter and drawing page to feel close to someone they miss
  • A calm, child-friendly wrap-up about taking care of themselves

Why Children Love It:

  • No pressure to write lots,  space to draw, colour, and be creative
  • Soothing black-and-white line drawings for low sensory load
  • Clear visuals and kind language throughout

Help a child feel seen, soothed, and supported during difficult times with this beautiful, printable resource.

Because children need care too, even when they’re not the ones who are poorly.

"Thanks for all the work you do on the website, as I honestly don’t think I would be the Elsa I am today without your resources. I bought the starter pack when I started Elsa and it gave me a good start. I’m always on your site as I love the shared ideas too. Our school is on a tight budget - as are many - so I love your Freebie Friday as I use these resources most days and it helps so many vulnerable children on a daily basis. I don’t think I’d be the Elsa I am today without it. Thanks so much Debbie for the time and effort you take to make it all happen."
