Vertical Anger intensity Wall Scale – Item 689
We now have this Vertical Anger Intensity Wall Scale. We already have an anger scale on the website but it is horizontal. One of our members emailed to ask for a vertical one so here it is.
An Anger Intensity wall scale is an effective visual tool that helps children recognise and communicate their anger levels. By displaying a scale that moves from bothered to furious, with corresponding numbers (either 1 to 10 or 1 to 5), pupils can develop greater self-awareness and emotional control.
Why Use a Vertical Anger Intensity Wall Scale?
Encourages emotional awareness
Many children struggle to recognise when frustration is building. A visual scale helps them pinpoint their feelings before they escalate.
Provides a common language for anger
Having a structured way to describe anger levels allows pupils and adults to communicate effectively without misunderstandings.
Supports self-regulation strategies
When a child identifies their anger level, they can use appropriate coping strategies. For example, if they’re at ‘annoyed’ (3 or 4 on a 5-scale), they might take deep breaths or use a fidget tool before reaching ‘angry’ or ‘furious.’
Reduces outbursts and escalation
By recognising anger at an earlier stage, children are more likely to intervene before reaching a full-blown outburst. This benefits both the individual and the overall classroom environment.
Creates a safe space for discussion
In ELSA sessions, an anger scale can be a springboard for talking about triggers, bodily sensations linked to anger, and personal coping mechanisms.
Encourages independence
Instead of relying solely on adult intervention, children learn to assess and regulate their own emotions using a structured framework.
Makes emotional learning accessible
A clear visual representation helps neurodivergent children, younger pupils, or those with limited emotional vocabulary to express themselves in a way that feels manageable.
Perfect for Classrooms and ELSA Spaces
An anger vertical scale is not just a poster—it’s a proactive tool for emotional literacy and behaviour support. Whether in a whole-class setting or one-to-one sessions, it fosters an environment where emotions are recognised, validated, and managed effectively.
Each face is on an A4 sheet so all you need to do is print it, cut off the edges and piece it together on the wall.
