Someone I Love Is Unwell pupil leaflet is a child-friendly leaflet to support children aged 5–11 when someone they love is seriously ill.

This printable trifold leaflet is designed to help children explore their feelings, worries, and questions when a loved one such as a parent, carer, sibling, or grandparent is unwell or in and out of hospital.

The leaflet supports emotional understanding, encourages expression, and helps children feel safe, seen, and supported.

Inside, children will find:

  • Reassurance that all feelings are valid
  • Suggestions of who they can talk to
  • A clear explanation of what they can and can’t control
  • Simple self-care ideas they can try at school or home

How to use it:
This resource can be used 1:1 with an ELSA, TA, or teacher, as part of a nurture session. It could also be gently explored at home with a trusted adult. It works well as a companion to our longer workbook, or on its own as a soft-touch support tool for children facing uncertainty or emotional overwhelm.

They are for printing and giving to pupils at the end of a session or you could use them as a basis for your session. Work through each part with the pupil.

"I am a head of year in a secondary school. I am not ELSA trained, but I find this site so helpful in my day when working with the students.
It is a very valuable resource that I use every day.
 Thank you."
