The After-School Routine Visual Board helps children feel calmer and more settled after a busy school day. For many children, especially those who are neurodivergent, managing emotions, sensory input and social expectations throughout the day can lead to emotional overwhelm once they get home. This is known as After-School Restraint Collapse. The routine offers structure, choice and gentle activities to support emotional regulation and recovery.

What is included in the After School Routine Visual Board?

The pack includes 24 activity cards and a base board with “To Do” and “Done” sections. It gives children a sense of control over their after-school time while helping them decompress in a safe and supportive way. We also include a set of blank cards if they want to create their own activity cards.

How to use

To use the routine, ask your child to choose six activities they would like to do that day. These can vary daily depending on how they are feeling. Stick the chosen cards in the “To Do” area using blue tack or velcro dots so they can be moved easily. As your child completes each activity, they move the card to the “Done” section. This simple step builds a sense of progress and encourages self-regulation without pressure.

There is no need to finish all six cards if your child feels tired. The goal is not to complete everything, but to create a calm, low-demand space where they can unwind and feel safe. You can support your child by helping them get started or sitting with them during activities. Let them lead the process in a way that works for them.

How often should it be used?

You can use the board daily or just a few times a week, depending on what suits your child best. Over time, it can become a positive and predictable part of the after-school routine that supports wellbeing, reduces stress and helps your child transition more peacefully from school to home.

"Debbie's website is amazing and always my go to for resources. So many to choose from and very easy to use. Debbie also gives out great advice through her Facebook page and connects me to other ELSAs which is also a great resource."
