Letting go of Negative Thoughts
This is an activity for letting go of negative thoughts.
This resource has been created to support pupils in managing and letting go of negative thoughts. Everyone experiences negative thoughts from time to time. For pupils, these can sometimes feel overwhelming. Their thoughts don’t have to control them. With the right guidance and tools, they can learn to release these thoughts and focus on a more positive, calm mindset.
At the core of this resource is the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness helps pupils become aware of their thoughts without getting caught up in them. Instead of automatically reacting to negative thoughts, they can learn to observe them, acknowledge them, and let them drift away. This helps pupils respond more calmly and thoughtfully to challenges in their daily lives.
One of the key mindfulness techniques in this resource is visualisation. Pupils are encouraged to imagine their thoughts as clouds in the sky, leaves on the river, or balloons floating up in the sky. This visualisation can help them detach from their thoughts and see them as temporary. To help make this practice, we encourage pupils to draw their visualisation. After imagining their thoughts as clouds or another image, pupils can take a moment to sketch it out. Drawing allows them to externalise their emotions, making the process of letting go more tangible and real. It also reinforces that these thoughts are not permanent and that they have the power to release them.
