Back to School Reset
Returning to school after a break can bring a mix of emotions for children such as excitement, worry, sadness, or uncertainty. The Back to School Reset is a gentle, printable A4 worksheet designed to support children as they ease back into routine in a calm and reassuring way.
This is differentiated 3 ways so there is an early years, primary and secondary version.
Rather than expecting children to switch instantly from holiday mode to school mode, this resource helps them pause, reflect, and gradually reconnect with school life. With a focus on emotional awareness and simple coping strategies, it provides a soft and supportive start to the day.
Children are guided through:
- Recognising and expressing how they feel
- Reflecting on their time away and linking it back to school
- Identifying small worries or challenges
- Thinking of simple, practical ways to feel calm
Benefits
- Supports a smooth and calm transition back to school
- Encourages emotional awareness and expression
- Helps reduce anxiety and overwhelm after time away
- Promotes positive thinking and self-kindness
- Builds confidence and readiness to learn
- Offers a low-pressure, child-friendly activity with minimal writing
Ideal for:
- Classroom morning routines
- Nurture groups or ELSA sessions
- Children who find transitions challenging
- Supporting emotional wellbeing after holidays or absences
Why it works
This resource is designed to be simple, visual, and reassuring, allowing children to engage without feeling overwhelmed. By combining reflection, choice, and calming strategies, it helps children feel more settled, understood, and ready for the day ahead.
